The Burlands Annals

The Annals of Barnsley and it's Environs is a Chronological Account of Events in Barnsley and District from 1744 to 1864 by John Hugh Burland.

John Hugh Burland was born in Barnsley in 1819, he became a radical and a Chartist and was forced to leave Barnsley to avoid imprisonment. When he returned he became a teacher, a profession he followed for the rest of his life. He married Eliza Hannah Surtees of Tankersley who's father was a descendant of the founder of the Surtees Society.

He commenced teaching at Hoyland Nether in 1876 where he died in 1888 and is buried in St Peters Burial Ground.
