Local Government

There is currently no tier of government covering South Yorkshire as a whole. This tier was abolished in 1986 and instead four unitary local authorities exist in each metropolitan district. These are Barnsley; Doncaster; Rotherham and Sheffield.

The model of leadership in three of the four local authorities is that of Leader and Cabinet whilst in the other, namely Doncaster, the Elected Mayor is solely accountable for decision making.

Certain local services in South Yorkshire are commissioned and provided by special single purpose bodies. These are:

  • The South Yorkshire Fire & Civil Defence Authority
  • The South Yorkshire Police Authority
  • South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority

In addition a further single purpose authority exists with responsibility for managing the local government pensions scheme in the sub region.

Whilst the membership of these authorities is largely drawn from the district councils, the Police Authority is also composed of magistrates and co-opted members drawn from the business and community sectors.
